Since the first day it was launched, Barbie has become a doll phenomenon. It becomes every girl’s favorite doll all around the world. Even though it also develops some lawsuits and critics, but it still becomes the world best seller doll.
It, firstly, created by Ruth Handler. She is the wife of Mattel’s owner, Elliot Handler. It was started when she observed that her daughter, Barbara, was really enjoyed to dress up her doll. She started to think about making an adult figure doll, but she had not known the doll’s design. Then, when she was on a family vacation in Switzerland, she spotted a German doll, Bild Lilli. This Lilli doll was different from the common doll at this point, because this doll is in adult woman figure. The figure of Lilli resembled to her imagination. So, she bought three of this doll and gave two of it to Mattel’s designer. In May 1959, Barbie was firstly launched. It was manufactured in Japan. The first Barbie doll wore a swimsuit in black and white strips. The hair was in blonde and brunette ponytail.
This first Barbie was sold for hundred thousands dolls and the selling becomes unstoppable since that time. The designers in Mattel Inc. have created new items, new dresses, and new characters to Barbie. These improvements have made Barbie become a collectible item and a doll for all ages.
